Extruder calibration

Test prints / Machine baseline

Heat, then push exactly 100 mm of filament slowly: the rest of the marked 120 mm tells the true steps.

Nothing to print: this test is a procedure.

Procedure

What it is for. It shows that the extruder pushes the length of filament that the firmware asks for. If it pushes too much or too little, every flow value is wrong.

Print. Load plain PLA. Make a mark on the filament 120 mm above the extruder’s entry. Run the file for your printer, which heats to 215 °C and pushes 100 mm at 2 mm/s. No part prints.

Measure. Measure from the extruder’s entry to the mark with a steel rule or calipers.

Pass. 20 mm means the steps are correct. The Core One+ has no user E-steps: if it is more than 2 mm out, look for a slipping drive gear. On the Kobra Max and the i3 MK2, if it is more than 1 mm out, new steps = old steps × 100 / (120 − measured). Read the old value with M503 and save with M92 E<value> then M500.

Record. The measured length, and on the Kobra Max or the i3 MK2 the old and new steps. The i3 MK2’s stock value is 161.3; its MK2.5S+ upgrade changes to Bondtech gearing, so an MK2 result is valid only until that upgrade.
